Trauma is the number one cause of death in the U.S for people under the age of 44, and it’s the third leading cause of overall death. There are approximately two million people who suffer from a brain injury that are reported in this country every year. Of the brain injuries reported, more than 50,000 were fatal and up to 30 percent of those victims who survived now have permanent disabilities. Statistics show that there are currently over five million people in the U.S. that suffer from permanent disability because of a brain injury.
Results of a brain injury includes: loss of memory, loss of ability to think and reason, loss of motor functions, paralysis, loss of ability to speak, hear, or see, and psychological problems like depression and anxiety.
There are three general types of head injury:
Anoxic brain injury occurs when the brain loses its oxygen supply. This happens when there is a lack of oxygen consumption or the blood stream is unable to deliver the oxygen to the brain. Causes of this type of brain injury includes scuba diving, swimming, and surgical accidents.
Concussion is a change in one’s state of consciousness caused by a blow to the head. Someone who suffers a concussion may experience dizziness, nausea, a weak pulse, and memory loss. Their breathing may be rapid or too slow. When the victim regains consciousness, they are likely to have an intense headache and some experience blurred vision. Depending on the severity of the injury, the victim can become comatose. Sports are a leading cause of concussions.
Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) occurs when the brain accelerates or decelerates too quickly. This may cause ripping of nerve fibers, bruising of outer brain tissue, brain stem complications, and swelling. Many traumatic brain injuries are caused by car accidents.
